Queen Institute of District Nursing,Brass Badge with Neck ChordA Brass District Nurses badge for the Queen's Institute.
The origins of the Institute lie in the fund-raising among 'the women of England' for an offering to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 1887. The Queen chose to use the money to support district nursing and a plan for a district nursing service was sketched out by William Rathbone and Florence Nightingale. The aims of the Institute were to apply the Queen's gift to training nurses in district work.
A similar badge featuring the Royal Cypher of VRI in different metals, with different wording was issued over the lifespan of the Institute. This, the standard badge has a pin back fixing as well as a ring allowing it to be worn from a neck chord. The original blue and white chord is still attached, although rather dirty and frayed.
The badge is numbered to the reverse 21419.Unfortunately the roll of district nurses is only available upto the 1930 but I believe this is probably the badge issued to Jeanette Elizabeth Stibbs as these were part of the same auction lot.Height 42mm
