Medico-Psychological Association,Silver Prize Medal,Glamorgan County Asylum

An early rare silver prize medal for Proficiency in Mental Nursing,awarded by the Glamorgan County Asylum Committee.The county asylum consisted of Angleton and Parc Gwylit (and later Morgannwg) near Bridgend,these hospitals closed in the 1990s.
The medal would have been awarded to the top finalists for success in the examination of the MPA.The medal consists of a Maltese cross featuring a Welsh Dragon to the centre with oak leaves and acorns to each of the arms.This would normally hang from a narrow dark silk ribbon but this is absent.
The reverse is engraved to John Bevan 1897.It bears silver hallmarks for S.B.& S.Ltd. Birmingham 1886.Height 34mm

A silver and enamel Badge from the St Cadoc's Hospital in Caerleon Newport Wales. Originally the Newport Borough Asylum it became St Cadoc's hospital upon joining the new NHS in 1948.This badge dates to shortly after that time when it was part of the Vale of Usk Hospital Management Committee along with Pen y Val hospital in Abergavenny.In very good condition with only minor surface scratches.Pin and clasp are good.Silver hallmarks for T& Co London 1951.Height 32mm

A brass and enamel Nurses badge from the South Glamorgan Health Authority School of Nursing.This was for the Graduate Nursing Course in the 1970s, the school being based at the the University Hospital of Wales,Heath Park,Cardiff.The two piece construction bears a shield with a lamp of Learning, the chevron shield emblem of Cardiff, and the rearing dragon emblem of Wales holding a Rod of Asclepius.Good overall condition. Pin, clasp and safety roller catch all good.Unmarked to rear.Height 37mm

A popular silver and enamel nurses badge from the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.It consists of a St Cuthbert's Cross with arms in blue enamel.Mounted on a central silver octagon is a nurses lamp of Learning surrounded by Royal Gwent Hospital School.To each of the corners of the cross is a silver Daffodil.Some chips and scratches to the enamel but otherwise intact.Pin & Clasp intact.Numbered to the rear 48,hallmarks for JWT (J W Tiptaft & Son Ltd)Birmingham 1929. Faintly scratched on the back is B Owen Feb 1929.This appears to be Bessie Owen who is shown in the GNC records as training at the Royal Gwent from 1926-29.height 36mm

A brass and enamel Nurses badge from the Wrexham & East Denbighshire War Memorial Hospital.The hospital was built to commemorate the War dead of the First World War and opened in 1926.The shield shape badge has a Welsh dragon to the centre and is in good general condition.The pin and clasp are good.Makers mark for Thomas Fattorini Ltd Regent Street Birmingham.This dates it to between 1933 and 1961 and I estimate the badge dates to the late 1930s/early 1940s.
