Monmouthshire Asylum Committee/MPA badge pair

A rare pair of badges for Mental Nurse Training in the 19th Century.
The first is a silver prize medal presented by the Monmouthshire Asylum Committee to Thomas Lewis for gaining the certificate of Proficiency in Nursing of the Medico-Psychological Association of Great Britain & Ireland.It takes the form of a Maltese cross with oak leaf garlands and acorns to the arms and a central motif of a blindfolded Lady Justice.
This is dated 1897 and bears hallmarks for HC(Henry Cook) Birmingham 1897.The medal has considerable surface wear but retains its original silk ribbon and stick pin suspension
The second item is the matching bronze medal from the medico Psychological Association bearing the figure of Psyche.Unusually this is not named but has the same mounts, ribbon and pin fixing as the first badge and has the same provenance.
The Monmouthshire Asylum was located at Abergavenny in Wales ,later being renamed Pen-Y-Fal, and finally closing in 1997.A Nice early example of Mental Nurse training

A pair of badges awarded to the same nurse for her training in Wales during the 1960s and 70s.
The first item is a base metal badge for Bridgend General Hospital.It features a Lamp of Learning at the centre of a voided cross.Around the border on Blue enamel is Bridgend General Hospital and Gorau Golud-Iechyd ,which in Welsh means Best Wealth-Health.Good general condition with some wear, pin clasp and safety roller catch are all good.Scratched on the rear is D P L Moule Feb 1972.Height 32mm
The second item is a chrome and enamel General nursing Council for England & Wales badge.This is named to DPL Moule RMN 42711. SRN 449573 30.3.72 Condition is good with pin and clasp intact, safety chain in situ.

A pair of badges awarded to the same nurse for her training in Wales during the 1930s.They consist of a Gwent School of Nursing silver and enamel badge, still in its original retailers box, in excellent condition.(This badge is prone to enamel damage but this really is a superb example) The design consists of an enamel cross with a Lamp of Learning to the centre and Royal Gwent Hospital School .There are daffodils to each corner of the cross. Numbered 273 to the rear, hallmarked for JWT (James Walter Tiptaft) Birmingham 1937.
The accompanying badge is in silver and enamel from the General Nursing Council For England & Wales.Name for EM Jenkins(Elizabeth Mary Jenkins) SRN 81838 13.3.36

A scarce silver and enamel nurses badge from the Gwent College of Nursing & Midwifery based in Newport.These were issued with a bottom scroll bearing the speciality training, this one being for General Nursing.The design features a capital G for Gwent with a rod of Asclepius to the voided centre.The College title appears on a blue band around the edge and the speciality on a blue band at the base.Excellent condition with pin clasp and safety roller catch all good .Makers mark for Fattorini Birmingham,Silver hallmarks for TF Birmingham 1987 height 33mm

A trio of badges to the same nurse.These are a chrome and enamel General Nursing Council for England & Wales badge named for E Ayers SRN 318087 27.11.62.Condition is good but with moderate surface wear.The second being a base metal and enamel badge for the Swansea General & Eye Hospital.The shield shape badge has the monogram SGH topped by a white scroll with the motto Amica Generis Humane-Friends of the Human Race.Named to E Ayers Entered 1.9.59 Makers mark for Toye & Co London.Moderate enamel damage as pictured.Lastly is a badge for the Student Nurses Association.

The first item is a bronze and enamel General Nursing Council For England & Wales Badge,It is engraved SEN 167046.Condition fair with some damage to enamel/
The second items a silver and enamel badge for Nevill Hall hospital in Abergavenny, Wales. These badges were first issued on 17.11.1968,and were selected from a competition for the new school.The Red Cross depicts the Hospital ,the daffodil Wales. The horse links with the Nevill Family and is taken from a stone horse on the arch of a stable building on the original estate.The Portcullis is part of the arms of Abergavenny,"the gateway to Wales".The serpent and staff depict Medical practice.In good overall condition but the clasp is missing its safety roller catch and the pin is stuck.Named for M A Spackman 1975 Height 30mm

The medal is suspended from a plain brass pin back bar brooch.It bears an image of the original Hospital with the title on a banded belt to the edge.Below this is a scroll with the latin motto Amica Generis Humani- A friend to the human race.Inscribed on the back 246 B E Davies 4 Nov 1932. Condition is good although it has been over polished in the past.Height 50mm

Medico-Psychological Association,Silver Prize Medal,Glamorgan County Asylum

An early rare silver prize medal for Proficiency in Mental Nursing,awarded by the Glamorgan County Asylum Committee.The county asylum consisted of Angleton and Parc Gwylit (and later Morgannwg) near Bridgend,these hospitals closed in the 1990s.
The medal would have been awarded to the top finalists for success in the examination of the MPA.The medal consists of a Maltese cross featuring a Welsh Dragon to the centre with oak leaves and acorns to each of the arms.This would normally hang from a narrow dark silk ribbon but this is absent.
The reverse is engraved to John Bevan 1897.It bears silver hallmarks for S.B.& S.Ltd. Birmingham 1886.Height 34mm
