A scarce brass and enamel nurses badge from St Edmunds Hospital Northampton.Originally Northampton workhouse it became St Edmunds Hospital,a geriatric facility,after 1930 before closing in the late 1990s.The building is now due to be converted into an elderly care home.
This badge features the 3 crowns pierced by arrows which represent St Edmund,the martyred king of England killed by arrows for refusing to denounce his Christian faith.This motif is upon a rose shaped badge,denoting the Rose of Northamptonshire
In generally good condition with enamel intact although with several surface scratches.Pin and clasp intact.
Engraved to rear M J Barber,makers mark J Pinches London.I estimate this badge to date to the 1950s,Height 34mm
