Greenwich District Hospital,Silver pendant Nurses badge
A large silver and enamel nurses badge from the Greenwich District Hospital. This was the title given to the newly built Hospital which opened in 1972 and took over from the previous St Alfege's Hospitals on the same site. The Hospital closed in 2001 and was demolished to be converted into a new housing development.
The badge itself consists of a central disc with a snake entwined around a trident surround by six stars. This mimics the rod of Asclepius but with homage to the Naval heritage of the Borough.
The stars represent the links with the local Royal Observatory. This lies upon an enamelled cross which itself overlays a laurel wreath. In reasonably good condition although there is a partial loss of enamel to the lower arm of the cross and some surface scratches.Pin and clasp good.Marked Silver to the rear.Height 58mm
