A brass and enamel badge for the Royal Albert Institution in Lancaster,a Learning Disabilities Hospital.Originally opened in 1870 as the "Royal Albert Asylum for Idiots and Imbeciles of the Seven Northern counties",it was renamed the RAI in 1910 before finally being renamed the Royal Albert Hospital in 1948.It finally closed in 1996.
This badge consists of Brass Geneva cross in red enamel on which the Initials RAI are intertwined.The rear is engraved for Mary J Johnson 1916.Good condition overall,despite some surface scratches.Pin and clasp intact but bent.Height 33mm
