A nicely enamelled Nurses badge for the Fountain Hospital Tooting Grove.Originally opened as a Fever Hospital for Scarlet fever,it was converted to a major Learning Disabilities Hospital for Children in 1912.Operating out of "temporary" wood and iron hutted wards,it became the Fountain hospital when it joined the new NHS in 1948.It eventually closed in 1963 and the site is now home to St George's Hospital Tooting.
The badge which dates to the 1950s features a young child surrounded by flowers,playing with a tortoise(symbolising the handicap of mental retardation).The title Fountain Hospital is on a red enamel scroll to the base.Good overall condition,pin,clasp and safety roller catch all good.Unmarked to rear.Height 39mm
