Greenwich & Deptford Hospital ,Nurse Prize Medal
One of the favourite items in my collection, this superb silver gilt and enamel nurses Prize medal is simply stunning.Originally the Greenwich Union Infirmary,it was transferred to the LCC in 1929 when it was officially renamed the Greenwich & Deptford Hospital. It was however later renamed in 1931 as St Alfege's Hospital,so this medal would only have been awarded for a very short period.
It consists of an enamelled medal showing the nearby observatory at Greenwich. The enamel is almost pristine but I can see two small scratches under magnification although these do not detract from the image. It hangs on it's original silk ribbon showing the cross of St George from a pin back suspension broochTo the rear is is engraved for Miss A.K.Smith-Finch .it is hallmarked RS for Spencer & Co of London,a noted maker of Masonic regalia, and year letter for 1927.Whilst is does come in a fitted presentation case ,this is not original being labelled as being from Spink & son,so this is a later marriage.Do please contact me for further pictures or to discuss a set aside arrangement but this really is a one off.Height 80mm
