St Olaves Hospital Rotherhithe,Nurses Badge

Originally the Workhouse Infirmary for Rotherhithe it was renamed St Olaves Hospital after it came under the control of the London County Council in 1930. The Hospital suffered five direct hits from Bombs and rockets during World War 2.After the war it experienced staffing difficulties which led to a recruitment campaign for foreign nurses.This proved successful and a veritable United Nations of nurses, some 14 nationalities, including German, Spanish,Jamaican and Italian!
The badge features St Olave ,a martyred king of Norway with links to the area.Good condition but with signs of wear to the silvered finish.Pin and clasp good.Height 38mm
