Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve,Silver Nurses Cape badge
A Large and heavy Silver(not marked as such)Badge for the Princess Christian's Army Nursing Service Reserve formed in March 1897.It's members, who worked as Nurses in civilian Hospitals, were to be mobilised in times of conflict to staff the Army's Hospitals.Their major debut was in the 2nd Boer War in South Africa where many served bravely.
I recommend the site; http://britisharmynurses.com/index.php/researching-army-nurses/boer-war-database
The badge has the issue number 552.This was issued to Eleanor Mary Beetham who trained at Crumpsall Infirmary Manchester. She served in South Africa and was eligible for the Queen's South Africa medal, raised at No 13 General Hospital Johannesburg.
Condition, It has sustained damage to the pin and has been remounted to a necklace fitting.Highly polished resulting in some surface wear to the cross,as pictured, but otherwise good. Some kicks but still a rare piece. Another lovely item with early links to our Army Nursing Services and now becoming very difficult to source,I'm afraid the price reflects my purchase cost.A large and impressive badge being some 50mm high.
