Holloway Sanatorium, cased silver medal and RMPA pair
A nice pair of Mental Nurses badges from the Holloway Sanatorium. This was located at St Anne's Heath,Virginia Waters,Surrey and opened in 1885 as a private mental hospital for the middle classes.Unlike the usual asylums it was ornately designed and sumptuously decorated. It finally closed in 1980 and the building now houses a luxury gated development.
The medal is one of two similar designs and this one consists of a silver maltese cross with ball finials to the eight points of the cross. At The centre of this is an enamelled shield bearing the crest of the Holloway family. This is on a laurel wreath with voided centre. It is topped by the hinged intertwined letters St AH for St Anne's Heath and is hung on a divided blue and red silk ribbon (rather worn)which has a silver pin back suspension bar brooch which is marked for 1928-1933( I have seen medals with several of these bars and believe they denote years of service rather than training). The bar is missing it's pin.The medal is hallmarked for Mappin & Webb,Birmingham 1912.The rear is engraved for J.C.Butler. comes in it's original velvet and silk lined wooden presentation case ,marked for Mappin & Webb.Height 98mm
It is accompanied by a bronze medal from the Royal Medico Psychological Association with its original blue silk ribbon which is in an extremely poor state, and separate suspension bar brooch. This is also named to J C Butler, the only possible match being a Jane Coffey Butler who was originally trained as a general nurse in Belfast before she moved to the mainland in the 1930s?.Height 49mm
Both items are in a reasonable condition as is the box.One of two similar items I am listing
