Society of Registered Male Nurses,Members Buttonhole Badge
A small bronze and enamel members badge from the Society of Registered Male Nurses. The badge consists of the intertwined initials SRMN with the title on a blue enamel band around the rim.Condition is fair with several small scratches and dings.Button hole back fixing.Height 19mm.A scarce item.
The organisation was established in 1936/37 with the aim of maintaining and developing the status of the male as a qualified Nurse. It was affiliated to the College of Nursing in 1941.The College however was reluctant to admit men as full members and only did so in 1960,The SRMN continued to run as a separate body until the late 1960s.It was only after the second world war that male nurse numbers in general nursing started to rise with new recruitment of men, largely from the forces.Prior to this the majority of men had been employed in Mental Health. An interesting and rare badge reflecting an interesting aspect of Nursing History. The price reflects scarcity and my purchase price
