Royal Red Cross,2nd Class Medal
A nice cased example of a First Word War Period medal of the Royal Red Cross,2nd class. Holders of this award are know as associates (Associate Royal Red Cross).The second class award was introduced in November 1915 and both grades were issued widely for Nursing Services during the war.
The medal is an enamelled silver Maltese cross with a central figure of the reigning monarch, in this case King George V.The reverse bears Faith,Hope and Charity and 1883(the year it was instigated) on each of the four arms.The royal cypher is in the centre.This is suspended from the red and blue silk bow ribbon fixing.In very good condition.
In its original paper covered wooden box with silk and velvet lining.The box has suffered damage in a couple of places.The exterior is embossed in gold RRC 2nd. The interior bears the makers mark,Garrard & Co Ltd by special appointment to His Majesty The King. 24 Albemarle st.London & Dalhousie Sq Calcutta.paper covering is coming loose in a couple of places.Height 62mm
