The Alice Long Medal,Norfolk & Norwich Hospital,Nurses Silver Prize Medal
An Extremely rare nurses prize medal from the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital.The Alice Long medal is named for the sister of Dr Sydney Herbert Long, who was a physician at the hospital .She had for a while been a nurse at the N&N and then Wells Hospital.She later joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service and served during the First World War before being invalided out due to ill health.She died in 1918 and her brother endowed a nursing prize to include the medal. In very good condition the medal is suspended from a blue striped silk ribbon with pin back suspension bar.The reverse is engraved ; Norfolk & Norwich Hospital Awarded to Nurse Dorothy M J Varney for General Proficiency 1949, Silver hallmarks for ACCo London 1949,Height to medal ring 52mm.Length with ribbon 94mm An impressive piece.
