The British Lying in Hospital,Midwives Badge
A scarce Midwives badge with chord from what had originally been the British Lying In Hospital in Endell Street,St Giles.In 1915 it amalgamated with the Home for Mothers And Babies becoming the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies.

The badge itself is of rectangular design with a lion wearing an imperial crown holding a shield bearing the initials BLH(British Lying In Hospital) the other paw is holding down a writhing serpent(representing the serpent of puerperal sepsis).Behind the lion is a circular band bearing the motto Patior Potior ( I suffer I obtain).Across the base in Roman Numerals is the date of the Hospitals foundation 1749.The medal is worn suspended by a blue neck chord which is a replacement and shorter than would have been usual.
Condition is good with only minimal wear .Hallmarked to rear T&S London 1915
