St Marks Hospital for Cancer,Fistula & Other Diseases of the Rectum.Silver Nurses Badge
An interesting silver nurses badge for St Marks Hospital, City Road London. It consists of an oval badge in silver ,engraved with the winged lion of St Mark on a plinth below which is a scroll with St Marks. An ornate rope border is applied to the edge.
There are a number of surface scratches but condition is generally good with pin and clasp good.
The rear is inscribed for Ruth Knopf From 8th February 1941 to the 17th June 1943. Marked Silver.
From previous studies I believe this lady was a German Jew who escaped to the UK prior to the war and like several others in a similar situation was encouraged to undertake her Nurse training.
St Marks was part of a joint training school with the National Temperance Hospital and Ruth is shown on the GNC register on the 23rd November 1945 as having completed her training at the two hospitals between 1941 and 1945.She can later be found in the London Gazette having been granted naturalisation in December 1947.I can next find her on an electoral list at the General Lying in Hospital York Road in the 1950s.I believe that she may have left the UK in 1960 as I can find her on a ship to Lourenco Marques Mozambique. An interesting badge with a fascinating story which would benefit further research.
