Daughters of the Cross of Liege School of Nursing,Silver Nurses Badge

A scarce silver and enamel Nurses badge for the School of Nursing under the control of the Daughters of the Cross of Liege,a Catholic Mission. This consisted of a training which was split over the three different hospitals run by the group.These were St Anthony's Hospital Cheam,St Michael's Hospital Hayle and the Holy Cross Hospital Haslemere. The school started in 1942 and ran SRN training through until 1972 and later EN training up until 1980. The badge ,which takes the form of the eight pointed cross of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.The parts of the badge were ascribed meaning. The four arms are to symbolise the Cardinal Virtues – prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude – and the eight points represent the eight Beatitudes (or solemn blessings – they can be found in the Bible in St Matthew chapter 5, verses 3 – 10) which result from practicing these virtues.
In the central Disc are three emblems which relate to the three different Hospitals.Some surface scratches but otherwise good.Pin missing. Clasp and safety roller catch present. Engraved to rear D Murray 1959,Silver hallmarks for Fattorini & Sons Birmingham 1954.Height 41mm
