Rare First World War Ladies Silver & Enamel Red Cross Fob Watch.
A rare and puzzling silver fob watch dating to the First World War.It is unusual in that it has an enamelled red cross with stands proud of the body of the watch into which the face of the watch is embed. The mechanism and case are of Swiss manufacture and date to the First World War period. It has been fully reconditioned and cleaned and is in good working order. It does not, and never appears to have had ,a seconds hand and appears extremely impractical for field use.I believe it may be likely to be a presentation piece to a lady for red cross or VAD work.It has a cypher(which may be CCTH?) and numbers 2 7 3 1 engraved upon the back, but I have no idea of their meaning.it is designed to hang as a fob from a small knotted silver chain.Condition is very good but there are a couple of small nibbles to red the enamels pictured.Diameter 27mm
Altogether a bit of a puzzle but worthy of further investigation and a lovely piece
