Guys Hospital & Sick Children group,Thirza Swindells
An interesting group of badges and medals to one nurse for her training at the Hospital for Sick Children,Great Ormond Street and at Guys Hospital.
They consist of a chrome and enamel General Nursing Council for England & Wales badge.This is named for T Swindells RSCN 5783 23.11.45(This is Thirza Swindells who is recorded as having trained at the Hospital for Sick Children from 1942-45)
Secondly is a base metal and enamel badge for the Hospital for Sick Children( I believe this is a wartime austerity version).The condition of this is fair with moderate damage to the enamel at the edges as pictured,Pin is present but loose.Makers mark for Fattorini & Sons Ltd Bradford Works Birmingham.
We then have a brass and enamel badge for Guys Hospital Nurses League.In good condition with pin and clasp good.She is shown in the Guys Hospital Nurses League register as having been a student nurse at the Hospital for Sick Children from 1942-45,and at Guys to 1949.RSCN,SRN.Cazenove Gold Medal 1948.
The next medal is a silver Cazenove medal.The Cazenove Medal was originally awarded to the Nurse who Obtained the highest aggregate percentage of marks in all examinations for a year.The face bears the image of Sir Thomas Guy,Founder of the Hospital, above the date 1725. The reverse is marked Cazenove Medal 1897 Presented to Thirza Swindells.
Next is the Butterworth Medal, Instituted in 1889 by Joshua W Butterworth,this medal was awarded to all nurses of Guy's Hospital who had completed Five years of continuous satisfactory service at the Hospital.
The silver metal(not marked as silver)medal is suspended by a pin back brooch fixing.The face shows an image of Thomas Guy,Founder of the Hospital. The rear is engraved To Thirza Swindells1959 For Long Service.Lastly is a small plastic name badge for Miss T Swindells Senior Nurse Tutor. A nice group of badges reflecting on nurses career.
