Liverpool Southern Hospital, Hallmarked silver Ashtray

An unusual and rare item, namely a silver ashtray bearing the crest of the Royal Southern Hospital Liverpool. Measuring 9cm square, with four indentations at the corners if has crisp hallmarks for B&D Birmingham 1934 and is marked to the rear Boodle & Dunthorne. the centre of the ashtray has the crest of the Royal Southern Hospital as it appears on their nurse training school badges.
At one time smoking was common throughout hospitals and indeed across society.Whilst patients and visitors might be provided with similar crested pieces in base metal, this silver object is more likely to have been provided in a Boardroom or Doctors mess,or may even have been a presentation piece
