A nice cased example of a First Word War Period medal of the Royal Red Cross,2nd class. Holders of this award are know as associates (Associate Royal Red Cross).The second class award was introduced in November 1915 and both grades were issued widely for Nursing Services during the war.
The medal is an enamelled silver Maltese cross with a central figure of the reigning monarch, in this case King George V.The reverse bears Faith,Hope and Charity and 1883(the year it was instigated) on each of the four arms.The royal cypher is in the centre.This is suspended from the red and blue silk bow ribbon fixing.In very good condition.
In its original paper covered wooden box with silk and velvet lining.The box is rather worn and scuffed, as pictured.The interior bears the makers mark, Garrard & Co Ltd,Goldsmiths,Jewellers,EtcTo the King By special appointment to the Crown. 24 Albemarle st.London .Height 62mm
