Maidstone Typhoid Medal & Kent Nursing Institution Long Service pair.
A rare pair of medals awarded to the same nurse, relating to her service during the Maidstone Typhoid Epidemic of 1897.The background to the epidemic and its subsequent nursing involvement can be found in Sarah Rogers excellent article here

These were both awarded to Beatrice Mary Barnicoat. Born in 1870 in Landrake Cornwall.She is shown as having trained as a probationer at the Alexandra Hospital(?Which one) from March 1888 to April 1889,and the East London Hospital for Children to June 1890(cert 2 years).She worked there as a staff nurse until June 1891 and then as a staff nurse at the Oxford Radcliffe Infirmary to Jan 1892.This was followed by a stint at the Jenny Lind Infirmary(Children's Hospital) at Norwich until April 1893.She then took up a post as a private nurse with the Kent Nursing Institute at Tunbridge Wells.It was whilst employed here that she would have become involved in the efforts to treat and contain the Typhoid Outbreak at nearby Maidstone.
The medal itself consists of the shield bearing the arms of Maidstone suspended on an original blue silk ribbon with yellow stripes.A plain silver bar suspension brooch with pin is in situ.The rear has With Gratitude BM Barnicoat for Loving Services 1897. Good condition.
The second item is a white metal long service medal for the Kent Nursing InstituteThe badge consists of a Maltese Cross with central disc showing the figure of John the Baptist carrying a lamb.Around this is written" I Will Fear No Evil For Thou Art With Me".The reverse bears "In Recognition Of Devoted Service BM Barnicoat In Nursing The Sick.
