A nice group of First World War Medals and RCP Edinburgh medal to a male Mental Asylum Attendant.
with accompanying reference from John Keay, CBE. MD. FRCP. Medical Superintendent Bangor Mental Hospital West Lothian.
The WW1 medals are the 1914-15 star,War and Victory medals. These are all named to 5027 Pte R Campbell Army Cyclist Corps.The accompanying wallet which contains a letter of reference and identity card along with a small cased medal give a hint to the story behind the recipient.The typed letter from 1931 comes from John Keay CBE, MD FRCP Medical Superintendant Bagour Mental Hospital, West Lothian. He details how Robert Campbell( dob 09/08/1885 joined the nursing staff of Inverness Mental Hospital in 1902,later transferring to Bangour in 1907 .In 1914 he enlisted in the army gaining his "Pip,Squeek & Wilfred"medal trio.At the wars end he resumed his duties and in 1921 gained the small medal from the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh(wrongly attributed to a William Campbell).The Morison Bequest was for the Meritorious Attendance on the Insane.
A Robert Campbell is shown as having registered as a Scottish Mental Nurse on 02/03/23 under the category E/N -existing nurse.The 1950 listing shows him as being at the Lodge ,Chalmers Hospital,Edinburgh.
His 1940 National Identity card shows a very smartly dressed gentleman.
Research may be hampered by the extremely common name but many of the clues are there?
