A rare nurses badge for Merthyr Infirmary in South Wales.Merthyr Tydfil means the Burial place of Tydfil.St Tydfil. was the daughter of a Welsh chieftain who was killed by raiding Picts.Her burial place became a church and later shrine. The badge features her figure on a shield, from the towns coat of arms.She carries a distaff using in spinning denoting Industry, which the area is noted for.She is flanked by two crosses denoting her Martyrdom.
The shield is imposed on a Celtic type cross with the motto Am Weinyddu-For Administration. The whole is mounted on a blue silk ribbon on a bronze metal bar brooch bearing Merthyr Infirmary.In very good condition.Makers marks to rear Toye & co Ltd London.Height 70mm
