North Staffs Royal Infirmary,Silver "Royal Infirmary Queen "Medal
An interesting silver and enamel medal for the North Staffs Infirmary Queen, 1936-37.
The 1930s saw a popular boom in fund raising activities for Voluntary Hospitals prior to the introduction of the NHS in 1948. Many communities held carnivals or Hospital weeks with a variety of activities to raise money for their local hospitals. Some would appoint a king or queen to lead processions or fairs. This is the first medal I have seen specifically made for one of these Queens and it is based on the hospitals nurses school badge ,albeit larger , being 45mm to the suspension ring.In excellent condition it is engraved to Miss Belle Hopkinson NS Royal Infirmary Queen 1936-37
