General Hospital Jersey,Silver Nursing badge
An interesting silver and enamel fob badge for the General Hospital Jersey . This is the fob medal from a pendant badge which has lost its suspension bar. The central motif is the shield of the Jersey coat of arms.
This is the pattern of badge in use during the 1950s and 60s and this particular badge is hallmarked for 1959. Condition is worn but with no major enamel loss. The suspension loop is broken which is presumably how it was separated from its suspension bar. What makes this more interesting is the fact that it is engraved for A O'Brien 1937-1940. She would have been one of the pre-war probationers, and it appears she was one of the staff evacuated from the island just prior to the German Occupation in July 1940. The hospital then came under the control of the German Authorities and some of the remaining nurses stories can be read in this book; https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyond-Call-Duty-Medical-Occupation-ebook/dp/B00L4JWT78
It is likely that this badge was awarded retrospectively to nurse O'Brien in the 1950s. As I did my own nurse training there in the 1970s I find this aspect of the wartime history particularly fascinating!
