Miss Gwyneth Ceris Jones, Matron of the Westminster Hospital and the London Hospital, Nightingale hospital badge and other items

A selection of Badges and photographs relating to the career of Miss Gwyneth Ceris Jones who
Born in Bangor Wales in 1906, Gwyneth trained at St Thomas's Hospital from 1927-1930 gaining the Honour certificate of the Nightingale School of Nursing in September 1931. She excelled in teaching and administrative duties and undertook Sisters duties in the Children's Medical wards, her bedside nursing being described as excellent.
In 1934 she gained the Diploma in Nursing and became Senior Sister Tutor at St Thomas'. On the outbreak of war she was called up for QAIMNS Reserve but was released for domestic reasons.
In 1943 she joined the London Hospital and became Assistant Matron and in 1947 was appointed Matron of the Westminster Hospital. In 1951 she returned to the London Hospital as Matron serving there until 1961. She was the Chief Nursing Officer of the British Red Cross Society for 1962 to 1968 and was responsible for advising the society on all nursing matters. In 1971 she was awarded the ICRC Florence Nightingale medal, the highest award to civilian nurses. She died in July 1987.
These items came from her family and consist of several photographs of Gwyneth in her roles as Sister, and Matrons of the different hospitals. Several references and correspondence relating to the position of Matron at the Westminster Hospital. There ar also several snapshots featuring buildings at St Thomas' Hospital fro the 1930s.
There is a cased example the training badge of the Nightingale School of Nursing. In good overall condition with only minor damage to the bottom right tip.Pin, clasp and safety roller catch all good. Named for Nightingale School Gwyneth Ceris Jones 1931. The leather presentation case is very battered to the exterior but is good to the interior.
The next item is a superb cased enamel badge which I believe may have been awarded to Gwyneth for her role as Matron by the Westminster Hospital. It has a central enamel plaque showing the hospital building below a bar with Westminster hospital, topped by the Westminster portcullis.Unmarked to the rear.Pin and clasp good.
There are also some small badges relating to her service with the British Red Cross Society including he badge of Honour. The bulk of he rather Red Cross badges were donated by the family to the BRC archives.
Whilst a miniature of the ICRC Florence Nightingale medal is included the full size medal was unfortunately sold by the family several years ago.
