Maws Leather Nurses Chatelaine set with instruments, late 19th century
Another of these rare surviving pieces of Nursing equipment from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A Nurses chatelaine set of equipment in a leather case. These were widespread from the Mid Victorian era up until just after the First World War.Worn suspended from a nurses belt these would contain the nurses tools of her trade of the time. The contents could vary slightly but this is a fairly typical example.
It consists of a black leather case with apertures to fit the instruments.
In this case are; A white metal tongue depressor marked Maw London
a white metal wound probe/curettage spoon marked Maw London.
A white metal tube with brass top which would have contained a mercury thermometer (Now absent) marked Maw London
A small pair of metal tweazers with bone/ivory handle
A white metal cased glass pulse timer
A mother of pearl handled folding knife with silver blade. Hallmarked for Sheffield 1867
A white metal pair of sinus forceps
The leather case has straps to the rear to hold a notebook. It bears the stamp of S Maw Son & Sons London
The lower section has a loop for a pencil, present but possibly not original. This is also a cushioned section for pins and small pouch compartment with press stud fixing.
I estimate that this example dates to around the later part of the 19th century..In good condition overall .The metal loop for attaching it to the belt is in good condition but the straps are showing some signs of wear
Another rare and original item of great interest to the Nurse Historian or re-enactor.These seldom come onto the market and command high prices, especially in the US.
