A silver and enamel Nurses badge for the Severalls Mental Hospital near Colchester.The design features the "True Cross" associated with St Helena and Colchester,the lamp of learning,the serpent of health as featured in the Rod of Asclepius and the red rose.This pattern of badge was introduced after the hospital was absorbed into the new NHS in 1948.

Originally opened in 1932 as a colony for Mental Defectives at the Botley Park Estate near Chertsey in Surrey,part of the site served as an Emergency Hospital during WW2. The Mansion house ,which features on the badge,was used as Nursing and patient accommodation( the hospital finally closed in 1997 and the house is now a luxury wedding venue!)
