A chrome and enamel Mental Nurses badge from Knowle Hospital .The Hampshire County Lunatic Asylum opened in 1852 at Fareham and eventually closed in 1996.The shield shaped badge bears the Red Rose of Hampshire above a scroll bearing the Hospital name.In very good condition, the pin has been professionally replaced.Makers marks for Vaughtons Ltd B.Ham.Height 36mm

A nice Mental Nurses badge from the Holloway Sanatorium.This was located at St Anne's Heath,Virginia Waters,Surrey and opened in 1885 as a private mental hospital for the middle classes.Unlike the usual asylums it was ornately designed and sumptuously decorated.It finally closed in 1980 and the building now houses a luxury gated development.
